The Challenge
In the heart of historic Hampton, Virginia — a region rich with African American history — friends William Comer and Rodney Malone had a bold vision: to create more than just a brewery. They imagined a space that would honor Black legacy, celebrate resilience, and invite the community to gather around culture, coffee, and craft beer.

Their concept was rooted in significance. Named after the year the 13th Amendment was ratified, 1865 Brewing Company was built to stand as a symbol of freedom and progress. But while the heart of their vision was strong, they needed a brand that could carry the weight of its meaning and still feel fresh, approachable, and magnetic.
They came to us with a powerful idea. We helped them build a brand that could carry it — and carry it well.
Our Approach
Not Just Another Brewery
Our goal was to craft visual elements that made freedom feel tangible — not just an idea, but something you could see, wear, and experience. A brand you could gather around. A legacy you could hold.
Visual Identity Design & Cultural Storytelling
We crafted a color palette inspired by earthy Southern tones — warm browns, rich tans, and a distinctive teal that gave the brand a pop of vibrancy without losing its grounding.
Every brand touchpoint was anchored in the story of freedom, from packaging to merchandise. We wove in historical nods with a contemporary lens — not to look back, but to move the mission forward.

Merchandise & Packaging
We integrated original art by celebrated Black artists into beer can designs and merchandise, turning every product into a conversation piece — and a collector’s item.
